When it comes to improving on the looks of your home, sometimes there are things you can handle, and sometimes you need to call in the professionals. For anyone who isn’t savvy in the ways of wiring, re-wiring, plumbing, and painting, sometimes it pays to invest in the services of someone who knows what they’re doing. But sometimes people are a bit hesitant to trust their home renovation plans to a contractor. This can be because they’ve heard horror stories of unfinished kitchens and swindled friends, or it can be related to the fact that actually financing a major overhaul in any room of the house can take a sizable chunk out of a budget in no time at all.

Just like choosing anyone for any other important service, there are right ways and wrong ways to go about picking a contractor. And knowing what to say and what to look for can help you make the right choice the first time around, as well as know that you are on schedule and accomplishing what you need to. Whether you’re deciding on something more utilitarian, like replacing your home’s windows, or have your sights on an entirely new kitchen, here are five important steps in choosing the right contractor for your particular project.

#1 – Check references. This might sound like a no-brainer, but sometimes people choose contractors out of the phone book, or Google them and see only stellar reviews. Not bothering to look any further can put you at a major disadvantage, especially since review sites online are easy to manipulate or to flood with good or bad reviews. Take the effort to check references, and rest assured that you have the right kind of professional working in your home.

#2 – Figure out what’s the most important part for you. If you have something that you absolutely must have in your kitchen, and are willing to wait longer for it, know that this is your priority. If you have a big wedding or special occasion coming up and simply need everything done before guests arrive, keep this in mind. And if you are working on a serious budget and any sort of surprise could cause a great deal of trouble, know this, too. Whatever is the most important aspect of your project, stress it to your contractor. This way, you’re far more likely to get the results that you want.

#3 – Talk to your friends. If you aren’t comfortable simply picking someone’s name out of the phone book or off of some website online, then go to the sources that you know and trust. Whether it’s someone in your neighborhood or a friend from work, people are often really excited to talk about any sort of home renovation work they’ve had done. So figure out if the same contractor might be a good fit for you, and go ahead and get a name and a phone number so you can follow up.

#4 – Know your own budget and needs. If you’re serious about that new kitchen or an exciting renovated master bedroom, then you need to know what you want and what you don’t want. Know what budget you are working with, and figure out which are things you can live without, and what the cornerstone of your new room is. Being able to accurately explain this to a contractor is a major help for you and for him or her.

#5 – Get a second opinion. If you think that the first person to grace your home is the perfect fit, that’s fantastic–but give someone else a chance to pitch their ideas and their estimate to you, too. Sometimes people get swept up in the excitement of re-doing their home, and make major mistakes in terms of choosing based on the first person to walk through the door. If the first contractor to pitch to you was in fact the best, then they will still be there for you to approve in 48 hours.

Are home improvements tax deductible?

Home improvements, like renovating a home or making permanent additions to the home, increase the value of the house while making it more habitable. Home improvement loans, availed for the purpose of making certain improvements, qualify for tax deductions. In addition to these loans, certain expenses also qualify for tax deductions and tax credits. A tax deduction reduces the amount of taxable income. A tax credit, on the other hand, reduces the actual amount of tax that a person has to pay. Hence, a tax credit is better than a tax deduction since the former reduces the actual tax liability.

Home improvements, that have been undertaken for medical reasons, also qualify as medical expenses and are thus tax deductible. For instance, people suffering from heart ailments can install an elevator in the house, to avoid climbing the stairs, and can claim a tax deduction citing medical reasons. Improving the homes air filtration system by installing central air-conditioning or removing a drywall that may be damp and mould can help abate the symptoms of asthma in people experiencing breathing difficulty. The doctor may have to provide a letter stating the necessity of making these improvements. All reasonable costs, incurred to accommodate a handicapped individual, qualify for deductions. Constructing entrance and exit ramps for the home and widening the doorway at the entrance and the exit to the home in order to help handicapped people living in the home; installing railings and support bars along stairway and in the bathroom; modifying the kitchen to make it easily accessible to people with disabilities; modifying electric outlets and fixtures; installing lifts and levelling the ground are some of the capital expenses that are deductible.
The process of improving a real estate usually tends to be very expensive. Though this process is expensive, sometimes it is extremely essential. Home improvement grants and loans are financial aids extended to people to renovate personal real estates, like, their homes, farms and beach houses.  In the real estate market, better the condition of the property, the more is it’s market value. Also a beautifully interior designed and well furnished house, certainly is very inviting and comfortable.  In general, home repairs are not tax deductible, while home improvements are rarely tax deductible. Tax credits will reduce the taxes owed on that new amount. That is, a deduction will reduce the amount of income that is to be taxed. Credits reduce the taxes a person actually pays. Some tax credits are refundable. If the taxes owed are less than the credit, that person will receive money back. Other tax credits are non-refundable, which means that the person will not receive money back. Tax deductions can only reduce the taxes owed, but will not result in a payment beyond the refund of taxes already paid.
In general, home repairs are not tax deductible, while home improvements are rarely tax deductible. There are, however, a few types of improvements that do have tax deductions or credits, including medical necessity, home loan interest payments and energy efficiency. Building your own home is a challenging, yet very rewarding  endeavour. It requires determination, discipline, solid budgeting and a commitment to the project. Determining the cost for construction can be a good way to begin thinking about designing a custom home.

Which Home Improvements Pay Off?

Generally speaking, there are two ways to go about making home improvements. Either you splurge for something purely for the sybaritic pleasure of having it — the Italian marble bathroom you’ve dreamed about; that skylight that your spouse has been hinting at for the last six years — or you take a pragmatic approach, buying an energy-efficient furnace or repairing a leaky roof because you want to increase your home’s market value.
1) Covering the basic necessities – the first improvements you need to make are the ones that really matter. If there are any problems with your home’s structure or systems, you need to fix these first. Potential buyers care more about problems that affect a home’s function (like a leaky roof) than problems that are cosmetic (like an outdated kitchen). And, when potential buyers find out that the home needs major repairs (replacing the roof, updating an electrical system, or removing mould), they will move on to the next home for sale on their list. So, use your money wisely – especially if you have a limited budget. Focus on areas that make your home more liveable.
2) Kitchens – if your home poses no major problems, you can start your renovations in the kitchen. When you’re making home improvements, the kitchen is a good place to start because it can greatly affect the value of your home. Buyers want clean, updated kitchens. Be sure to use good quality materials and classic designs (but don’t go too modern). In order for your home improvements to pay off, you need them to appeal to a wide range of home buyers. Some of the easier improvements to make include painting the kitchen (using a neutral colour, of course) and replacing cabinet hardware if the current hardware is too basic or outdated. Replacing outdated appliances almost always pays back more than full. Also, make sure that your kitchen has sufficient lighting.

Exactly how much you’ll recoup in costs depends on several factors, including the direction of the broader housing market, the value of the homes in your neighbourhood, when you plan to sell the home and the nature of the project itself, explains Stacey Freed, senior editor of Remodelling magazine. In some housing markets, you could indeed earn more than your investment back on a remodelling project. When undertaking large remodelling projects, it is smart to research your local real estate market to find out if your project will return your investment when it is time to sell. Depending on where you live, the right project may return 100% of your investment. That is why research is the smartest way to begin any remodelling project.
Remodelling  projects should be done when you are planning on staying in the house for several years rather than starting major work for the sake of trying to increase resale value. Since you can’t guarantee that you will get a decent return, it makes the most sense to remodel when you will be able to enjoy the benefits in the long run; and make minor, more cosmetic changes if selling is your primary goal. Some home buyers (especially first-time home buyers) think that a down payment is the only cost of buying a home. However, they soon realize that their down payment is one of many costs that require cash or a check upfront. So, how much should you expect to pay before closing on your new home? When potential buyers drive up to your house, the first thing they see is the front of your house. Buyers know that usually the exterior of the house is a good indicator of the inside of the house, so the front of your home can make a very important first impression on potential buyers.
To make the best first impression possible, follow these seven steps. As a rule, improvements that increase the functional space of a home hold their value longer than ones that just make a house look better. Some basic home improvements and landscaping around your home can really increase the value and visual appeal of your property.

How to Bend Wood

Bending wood is not the daunting task that it appears to be at first glance. Depending on the degree of bend, and whether or not the bend is compound, there are a couple of methods for bending wood.

First, you need to have a form to bend your wood around and clamp to to hold thedesired shape. Most bent wood will have a certain degree of “springback”, so you must build your form with an allowance for this. And, unfortunately, there is no established formula for determining the degree of springback that a given species of wood will produce. Springback is also influenced by the bending method used. That is to say that steamed wood will spring,

or “unbend” more than wood that is laminated and glued. Another variable is the type of glue used in laminating.

As a general rule, the tighter the bend, the more the wood will spring back, making the allowance a matter of trial and error at best.

As laminating thin strips is the easiest method, we’ll begin with that process. The finished thickness of the project will have a direct bearing on the size of the strips to be used, but generally, the heaviest strip to use is about ¼” thick. Tight bends may have to be done with 1/8” strips or thinner, depending on the wood species. Sounds like a lot of experimenting, but I’m afraid that’s a necessary evil.

The form required for laminating can be as simple as a piece of pipe or as complex as a multi-station die. I like to keep things as simple as possible.

When laminating thin strips, you can minimize effort and spring back by soaking the strips before bending, and clamping them in the mold without gluing. Once they are dry, remove them from the mold, spread the glue and re-clamp them in the mold. Line the mold with waxed paper to prevent the lamination from sticking to the mold.

When I soak strips, I do so in an open container, and depending on the wood and the size of the strips, I soak them from 15 minutes to overnight. I also mix in a half cup of fabric softener per gallon of water. I find that it softens wood nearly as well as fabric.

If the project is small, and open time on the glue is not a factor, I’ll use poly-vinyl-acetate, or aliphatic resin glue. If I need more working time, I’ll use epoxy or resorcinol. I stay

away from the quick setting epoxies, however, because they rarely harden to the extent that the slow sets do. If you’re using light colored wood, resorcinol dries to a reddish color which might be objectionable on a finished project.

When bending thin woods such as guitar sides, the wood is commonly soaked as above, but it is bent over a hot bending jig, either electric, or heated with a propane torch. Brittle woods are supported on the outside of the bend with a thin stainless steel band to help prevent cracking.

Green woods can be bent much in the same way, or by heating the wood over hot coals or with a good heat gun.

For projects where lamination is objectionable, or when the wood is to be bent in compound curves, a steam box is the answer. One can be made fairly economically from PVC pipe, but it needs to be supported to keep the pipe from deforming.

The ends of the pipe need to be closed with a screw cap on at least one end, to allow access to the interior. Fit the other end of the pipe with a DWV reducing tee, and attach a radiator hose to the side outlet and to a new gas can large enough to hold sufficient water to last through the job. The water may be heated with a hot plate or a propane burner.

Drill through the pipe slightly below center in two or three locations and insert dowels for the wood to rest on. Steam must be allowed to circulate freely around the wood for even penetration. A hole about ½” in diameter should be drilled in the cap furthest from the steam

inlet to allow circulation. When you build the support frame for the steam box, pitch the box

toward the steam inlet to allow the condensation to return to the water supply.

Rule of thumb says that wood should be steamed fifteen minutes per inch of thickness, but here again, some experimenting will be necessary.

The wood needs to be placed into the form as quickly as possible, because as the wood cools, it is more difficult to bend. Make sure that your wood is at least two feet longer than the finished part, because it’s nearly impossible to bend a 3/4” piece of wood that is less than a foot long, so that last foot will have to be cut

off after the wood is dry.

Clamp the wood in the form securely, and leave it there until it is completely cool. If you are working with multiple pieces, place them in the steam box a approximately the interval required to place the piece in the form and clamp it, and remove them from the box in the same order.

With a little practice and a little luck, it shouldn’t take long to become proficient in wood

Changing Interior Doors And Sliders

In most houses, interior doors are hollow-core, meaning that they consist of a wood frame with flat veneer glued on the front and back. As a result they are lightweight and, quite frankly, flimsy. Typically the veneer surface has been either stained (if it’s neutral wood) or painted.You can easily switch to solid-core wooden interior doors, which come in a wide variety of styles and are readily available in standard indoor sizes. You can purchase an excellent interior wood door, unpainted and unstained, for around $150. (By contrast, a hollow-core door costs as little as $30.)Unless you are experienced, you are best off getting a prehung interior door, with hinges already attached to the jamb. Again, remove the existing door (by punching out the hinge pins) and then use a crowbar to remove the jamb and surrounding molding, being careful not to damage the wall on either side.Once the old door is out, you fit the new one into the jamb and, using wood shims (available where the door is sold), set it in place and then nail the jamb in. Finally, put on new molding (unless you were careful enough to save the old).Don’t overspend on interior doors. While replacing them will add to the value of the home, it won’t add much. More than anything else, the new doors simply lend an indefinable (but real) elegance to the interior.The entire replacement process shouldn’t take more than a few hours; once you get good at it, you’ll need much less time than that.Changing SlidersMany homes come with sliding glass doors leading out to the patio or backyard. After a time, the metal wheels on the sliding door wear out and it becomes hard to move. Further, the metal itself can date a house. The usual course of action, therefore, is to replace the doors.You can replace sliders with wooden, metal, or vinyl doors. A recent trend is to install French doors, the kind with lots of small windows.A standard replacement slider for a 5-foot door can cost $200 or $300. Change that to plastic and the price goes up $100. Move on to wood—particularly a door with true French windows—and you could easily pay $1000 or more, depending on the design.Dont’ use wood exterior sliders. Moisture will damage the wood and virtually every year you’ll need to spend hours repainting or restaining.The usual removal procedure is to lift out the slider. Yes, the door is heavy, so get help. Just slide it all the way open and then lift it off its track. To lift off the static portion of the slider, simply remove the two or three metal screws that are holding it in place. Then lift off the metal jamb by unscrewing it from the studs on the sides and the header above.Remember that changing the slider means replacing an exterior door. Usually removal of the old door will involve some damage to the exterior facing and the interior drywall. If you’re careful, however, you can limit the damage to less than an inch around the opening.If you are installing another slider, you simply reverse the process. Afterward, you will probably need to do some repair work both inside and out. If you are replacing the slider with a wooden door, follow the procedures described above. The trim or molding that comes with the new door will often cover all or most of the damage done when removing the original slider.Some vinyl sliders come with overlapping strips on the exterior. If you’re careful, they can cover the outer wall damage incurred when removing the old slider.
